CAPTURING PRISONERS
Capturing opponent‘s pieces is compulsory, even on the starting square. Any contraventions will be punished unless you’re in the end zone (freedom), (see Contraventions).
You can jump over your own prisoners in the freedom zone.
It’s not a good idea to leave a gap in the end zone where you need a 1 to move, because if you roll a 1 you have to set out a new piece. This makes closing the gap very difficult!
How to capture opponent´s: forwards, backwards, diagonally or horizontally
Example: If green rolls the following numbers, the following pieces can be captured:
Green captures orange backwards
Advantage: Green lands in front of the end zone
Green captures blue diagonally
Green captures yellow horizontally or captures blue straight forwards in the direction of play
Advantage: By capturing yellow, green gets closer to freedom
Capturing opponent‘s pieces – even across the end zone
If a prisoner is about to reach freedom (the goal), THEY MUST CROSS THE END ZONE to capture an opponent if the opponent can be reached with a throw of between 1 and 6.
Example:
Green rolls a 3 and has to capture diagonally. Afterwards, green once again has to move in the direction of play to reach freedom.
